Our Story
The story of The Exceptionals starts with a girl named Toni. Sterling Farber was a coach for his daughter’s softball team in Blue Springs.
During the season, Sterling noticed there was a girl in a wheelchair at the fence, paying close attention and cheering her sister’s team on enthusiastically. That picture of Toni, eagerly at the fence, stayed in Sterling’s mind and he felt a burden for those kids who could not play on the field and join in on the fun. Toni would love to play like her sister but she was in a wheelchair, which presented a challenge. Sterling decided that she, along with others should have the opportunity to play softball like anyone else, despite the obstacles or challenges.
He decided to start a softball league for kids with special needs and he decided to call it, The Exceptionals. This name reflects the exceptional kids that play softball every Monday night, despite the challenges and obstacles they face every day. It is their energy and simple joy that make them exceptional!
